VA Tripping: Part 3

Saturday night my eye went from really irritated to really painful. Oh, and swollen. I could barely keep it open. And so I did what every normal twenty seven year-old does. I called my mother. She, of course, told me about all of the worst-case scenarios before suggesting that I call our insurance company's nursing line. After explaining the situation to the nurse, she told me that I'd need to be seen within the next twelve hours. Due to the amount of pain I was in and the fact that it was only one eye (allergies normally effect both), she said there was definitely some cause for alarm.

So, off to the ER my sister and I went. We were the only ones in the waiting room, but it still took an hour to get called back. Then we waited there for what seemed like forever. It was freezing and the room itself was not exactly up to the "Mayo Standard" I'm accustomed to. My sister was pretty grossed out, too. She wouldn't even sit all the way back in her little plastic chair. A nurse took me down the hall for an eye test. It basically was just a poster slapped on the wall at the end of the hallway. I couldn't see past the second line out of my right eye and it would have totally freaked me out except I was too busy being fully aware of the serious audience I had all around me. I guess this hospital had never heard of privacy rights because all of the exam room doors were left open and most of the occupants were staring straight at me. One woman even had tipped her chair back so that she could get a better look at me. Is it wrong that I sort of hoped she might fall and bust her ass?

When the doc finally arrived he didn't have much to say. He told me that I either had a severe allergic reaction or an eye infection most likely caused by my contacts. Oh, and then he non-chalantly asked me if I might have chlamydia in. my. eye. CHLAMYDIA?! My sister and I just stared at him, mouths open. "Whaaaat?" And he says, "Well, it would be really rare and usually it's associated with birth and/or really weird sexual positions." I couldn't even believe the words coming out of his mouth. I just told him that I was married with a two year-old, so no, there wasn't a whole lot of sexual anything in my life, weird or otherwise. And he says, "Well, okay then. I need to get going. There is a very sick person down the hall that I need to attend to." And that was that. I had to check his badge on the way out to make sure he really was a physician and not some janitor playing doctor, or something. Still freaks me out just thinking about it. And then, because we hadn't yet had enough fun, we had to wait another 45 minutes before getting the prescription. We finally got home around 1:30am and promptly passed out.

Taken the morning after starting the antibiotic. "I'm too sexy for my sunglasses, too sexy for my sunglasses..."
As luck would have it, I awoke with a migraine the next morning. I stayed in bed for an extra couple of hours while the boys ran out to get my prescriptions. By lunch time, the fog in my head had cleared enough to allow us all to head out on another little adventure. We drove (for what seemed like forever) out to The Breaks to check out some gorgeous views. I don't recommend visiting that place with a toddler. Especially one who wants to do everything himself. Tantrums will be thrown and all because you don't want them to go toppling over the edge of a mountain. The nerve!

On the way home from the park we decided to stop by a gas station for drinks and snacks. Do you know what happens when you send your husband in for snacks? They bring back m&m's. For a toddler. Who will be strapped in the car for the next hour. Obviously he wasn't sitting in the back seat with him. It could have been bad, you guys, but instead it was hilarious. He put on quite the show.

After arriving back at the house we got in some more trampoline time and Haeden got to ride on Uncle Josh's tractor. His favorite part of the trip, I'm sure!

"What are youuuu lookin' at?"

Deep in thought... wondering what kind of trouble he can get into next, I'm sure.

At The Breaks. I love him, but he's an idiot. That drop was, like, straight down. Great influence on the kid, hon!

"OHMMMMM"

So. Many. Steps.

Where's Waldo?!
Tractor ridin' with Uncle Josh!

Probably his favorite part of the entire trip.

Weeeeee!

Look at his face! Priceless!

Who says white men can't jump?! Shoooooot.

HOORAY Virginia!

The drive home felt excruciatingly long. We were definitely smart to break it up over two days on the way up. We also made a very special stop on the way back to FL. It was a bit out of the way, but worth every extra minute on the road.

Haeden got to meet his Grandpa and GrandMary for the very first time. It's too difficult and personal to get into the specifics of why it has taken so long, but I can tell you that a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I had been looking forward to that day for a long time and though we didn't get nearly enough time as I would have liked, it still lived up to my every expectation.
My father, the instigator... about to start a leaf fight...
"BAM, BAM, BAM"

"I'm gonna get youuuuu!"

The trip was, all in all, fantastic. Emergency room excluded. I cannot wait to get back there again. And hopefully, someday, to move closer. Not exactly sure that I can handle being as far out in the "boonies" as my sister, but definitely want to be in the mountains again one day.

Embrace the Camera: August 18

It's been a few weeks since I've participated, so I thought it would be fun to share some cute shots from our VA trip (though I admit a few of these may be duplicates from other posts).

Haeden, of course, wanted to be able to run and play and climb rocks wherever we went. Saying he loves to be outside is an understatement. Unfortunately, it seemed that everywhere we went I had to keep a tight grip on his hand to ensure that he didn't go tumbling over a mountainside. He didn't really appreciate that...

Whenever Haeden is feeling tired or shy he has the tendency to stick his forehead into my neck. It's absolutely the sweetest thing...

Aunt Robyn has lots of fun toys at her house. This big ol' trampoline is one of them. We had one growing up and it's a wonder it never resulted in any broken bones. Funny how you don't realize how dangerous something is until you become the mother.

These are the kind of anctics we get into when left to our own devices. Robyn has air vents in her floors and, well, we couldn't resist...

Counting down the days until our next reunion!

VA Tripping: Part 2

Saturday was fuuuun – ish. We had planned on an easy bike ride on the Creeper Trail. Well, Robyn and I had planned on it being easy, but our husbands apparently had something else in mind. Their plan involved dirt, sweat and pain due to copious amounts of uphill bike riding. On rough terrain. Oh, and the fact that my eye was in the middle of spazzing out really wasn’t helping matters. I won’t go into details about the bike ride itself because I don’t really want to embarrass Robyn or myself, but let’s just say that a tear or two may have been shed. It really seemed like we’d never make it back to the car. Clearly we need to work on our cardio, sis.
"MINE"

Future mountain biker... I'd be excited too if I didn't have to "feel the burn"!

Horses make me giddy. I got a little too excited and these guys took off in a hurry.

By the time we made it back to the car, I was seriously considering eating my own leg. I settled for begging off a few Cheez-its from Haeden. Good thing I taught him to share. We ate at this fun little restaurant called Bellacino's. Apparently it is a chain, but we don’t have one anywhere near us, so it was a new and fun experience. Their menu was huge and the ingredients fresh. I confess to you now that I broke my veggie diet because they had taco pizza. TACO PIZZA. My two favorite meals come together as one and obviously I could not resist. Plus, it was a childhood favorite and yes, I totally get sentimental over greasy food that my mom, sister and I once shared on a regular basis.

After stuffing ourselves to the gills, we headed out to check out an old mill of some sort. This was one my Mom recommended to us. Her favorite part was apparently some dog that was there last time she went. That was enough to convince me we should go, but unfortunately there was no doggy this time. Dan loves old wooden structures though, so it was a good experience for him just the same.

Me and H avoiding the camera!

Gorgeous!

Piggy back ride with Aunt "Ronin"

Seesters.

H and Daddy walking the trails.

Dan is so good at capturing the details. Lovely shot!

Checking out the accompanying country store. I really wanted that bonnet! ha!

That night we made a wonderful dinner that consisted entirely of things picked from Robyn and Josh's garden. Okay, okay - with the exception of the macaroni and cheese, but what do you expect with a toddler in the house?! It was probably the most delicious dinner I have ever had. I think we can all agree that eating "fresh" food is great... but actually picking it from your own garden makes it about ten times greater in my opinion. I have been wanting to have my own garden for years and that experience just pushed me over the edge and Dan along with me. We're now eagerly looking for books on Florida gardening. I know it isn't going to be easy, especially considering we can barely keep our grass alive in this heat, but I know it's possible, so we'll hope for the best. Even if we do succeed, I know that our bounty will never be quite like this...

The garden.

Picking tomatoes with Robyn.

 "I did it myseeeelf!!"

I love this shot simply for the background "detail". Where's Waldo ('s butt!)?! ha!

 YUM!

Squash!

Spicy banana pepper. Didn't even know there was such a thing!

H totally picked this and promptly bit into it. Can't take your eyes off that kid for 2 seconds!

Clearly has no idea what to do with these things...

There were SO many!

Peelin' taters!

A rare shot of me actually workin' in the kitchen!

God bless the creator of the grill!

Finished product! Is your mouth watering yet?

Bet it is now!

I made the mistake of taking the corn off the cob for Haeden. Apparently that was the wrong thing to do. He took a couple of bites off his plate and then grabbed the cob off of Robyn's plate and told her it was his. She got another one and then then once he finished with the first he slyly stuck it back on her plate and stole the new one telling her, "This mine. That one is yours!" Ha!

I won't tell you how many days it took before we stopped revisiting that corn...

I know you can't tell from all of the lovely pictures, but throughout the day my eye continued to get worse and worse. First it was blurry and watery. Then it got red. And then, finally, it got to be very painful and swollen. I wrestled with the idea of going to the ER, but in the end, between discussing it with my Mom (Dr. Mom as my friends and I call her) and someone from my insurance's nurse line, I decided it was best not to chance it with my eyesight.

Have you ever been to the ER in a very rural area? It was quite the experience...
